Art-n-Soulful Sundays: "The Lewis"

Reginald F. Lewis, lawyer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, Chairman, and CEO holds a place in Black History for being a remarkable international businessman. He was respected by well known colleagues as a self made entrepreneur with a heart of gold. He was devoted to education and preservation of African American History and Culture. After his untimely death in 1993, The VP of the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation partnered with the Maryland State Department of Education to develop and African American curriculum to be taught in all public schools. The State of Maryland awarded the Foundation $5 million to build what is now known as The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture.

The Reginald F. Lewis Museum (The Lewis) tells stories of African American heroes in Maryland through its permanent collection, dynamic programs and special exhibitions.

Black History Month 2011 (NOW thru March 2011): African Americans in the Civil War
This year's national Black History Month theme honors African American men and women who courageously fought for freedom and equality in the United States during the 1860s. Various ongoing exhibits and programs scheduled. Check with the museum for dates and times.

Second Level: Special Exhibitions
"Material Girls" Contemporary Black Women Artist Exhibition (Feb 12th-Oct 16, 2011)
Look through the eyes of eight contemporary female artists who create thought-provoking three dimensional art with common materials, such as combs, cray paper, rubber, and Antique Comestics and Beauty Products used by African American Women.

Third Level: Permanent galleries provide cross-generational dialogue and thought about the rich contributions of African American Marylanders from the state's earliest history to present day.
